BWS Puzzle 33: Rhyme Time #7

Sound the chimes, it's time for rhymes! I had already thought of three of these rhymes before realizing there's an extra thematic element to them. Then, the fourth entry came to mind and I realized it fit that theme, too! I don't know if I'll ever be able to make another rhyme time + extra theme puzzle, so I hope you really enjoy this one.

Perhaps the extra thematic element will give you some hints and help you solve the puzzle. In any event, I realize there's a lot of names in this puzzle (by necessity, at times), so I'm struggling with deciding on a difficulty level. I've decided to call it hard difficulty overall, but I also eased up the clues for some proper nouns via wordplay hints (especially in the bottom-right corner, where constructing stalled a bit). I hope this makes the puzzle more feasible and interesting for y'all.

Enjoy the solve, and share if you do! Constructive feedback in the comments is always welcome.

  1. Hi Brendan, I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your puzzles. My math education ended after calculus (45 years ago) but I still love to read about math (and solve puzzles including math-related answers). Also, I just finished a novel called The Tenth Muse, by Catherine Chung, which you might want to try - the protagonist is a brilliant math professor who discovers secrets about her past; it's full of math content and a compelling story.

    1. Hi Jeff! Thank you for the recommendation. I am always on the lookout for fictional representations of mathematicians, so I will put "The Tenth Muse" on my reading list. And I'm glad you appreciate the math content in the puzzles. Check back next week for a science/math related puzzle :-)

Puzzle 92: Take a Break

Just a quick break from themelesses for this silly little puzzle, inspired by a phrase that came up in conversation. Warning: one theme entry has some vulgar language; not recommended for kids. Enjoy the solve, and share if you do! puz pdf fullscreen solution

Puzzle 91: Themeless #23

I was almost halfway through cluing (an early version of) this when I noticed a short word in the grid duping part of a longer entry. See if you can guess what used to be at 1-Across before I had to rework that section... (Also, does anyone else have trouble deciding whether a ?  is warranted for a clue? There are some obvious, punny cases, but other times it feels like it comes down to a matter of how easily I think a solver will spot a misdirection or some kind of unexpected usage, and that's hard to do sometimes.) Anyway, enjoy the solve, and share if you do! puz pdf fullscreen solution
